Prior to that, he was the head of strategy and business development for GE Capital from 1990 through 1994, generally responsible for international business development, reporting directly to Gary Wendt, Chairman and CEO of GE Capital. While he headed the Group for three years, it resolved over US$ 4 Billion in problem loans, restructuring over 35 companies.

Paul left GE Capital in 1994 to join Lazard Freres as a General Partner. While at Lazard he established and ran Mexico Partners Trust, a fund created to invest in distressed debt in Mexico following the 1994 - 95 Mexican debt crisis. He was also on the Board of Lazard Asia.

Paul was a Partner of McKinsey, where he spent 10 years working with a variety of manufacturing, financial services and telecommunications clients. In 1985, he helped establish McKinsey’s first Asian office (outside Japan) in Hong Kong.
