Biocon India Limited, founded by Ms Kiran Mazumdar, is a pioneering enterprise in the Indian Biotech Industry. Biocon India manufactures and markets products in two main segments: therapeutic bio-molecules for healthcare and specialty enzymes.

In the healthcare segment, Biocon has combined its proprietary large-scale manufacturing technologies with the skill base in synthetic chemistry at Syngene (a research subsidiary) to successfully develop bio-molecules for domestic and overseas pharmaceutical markets. Biocon's most successful commercialization has been in the area of "Statins", which are the largest prescribed anti-cholesterol drugs in the world. The Company has started commercial supplies of Lovastatin, Simvastatin, Pravastatin, and Atorvastatin to world markets. Biocon's Lovastatin facility had been approved by USFDA in January 2001. Another drug segment in which the Company has attained commercial success is "immunosupressants". Biocon has successfully scaled up the manufacture of Mycophenolate Mofetil and Cyclosporin A, using its proprietary technology.

Biocon is the market leader for industrial enzymes in India. The Company supplies application-specific formulations to a diverse range of industry segments such as brewing, food & beverages, animal feed, starch processing, textiles, paper & pulp, detergents, leather, and, health care. Biocon also exports enzymes to

 

  global markets.

Syngene International
a fully owned subsidiary of Biocon India designs and executes contract research projects for companies in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology segments. Syngene has state-of-the-art facilities and cost competitive, highly skilled, scientific manpower in the areas of Molecular Biology, Synthetic Chemistry, and Informatics. Syngene's access to Biocon's microbial bio-diversity program, gives it an added advantage in microbial genomics.

Clinigene International is a fully owned subsidiary of Biocon India and conducts longitudinal clinical studies in select disease segments. The objective is to create clinical databases to identify new biomarkers as well as other genotypic and phenotypic disease indicators. These studies can result in developing and commercialising diagnostics and therapies technologies. Clinigene has the capability to conduct drug-related bio-studies and pharmacogenomics-based clinical studies.

IVF exited from its investment in Biocon when the company listed on the Indian stock exchange, following its hugely successful Initial Public Offering in March 2004, which was subscribed 33 times.
